Great Salt Pond, Block Island, Rhode Island, July ...
Author Last Post
We arrived here around 3:00 PM on July 1st from the east. As newcomers to Block Island, we were pleased to find that the approaches to the channel into Great Salt Pond were well marked. Once inside the Pond, though, we were confused by the instructions given by the marina we'd chosen, Block Island Boat Basin. They instructed us to come south from the entrance, but this course would have caused us to go straight through the mooring field, which was packed. A helpful local directed us to go southeast, which followed the channel. This brought us to Payne's Dock, the marina next to ours, and a turn to starboard brought us to the Boat Basin (blockislandboatbasin.net). There was plenty of water under the keel, a small marine store, and even a mechanic on duty until about 4:00 PM. Slip fees vary from $3.75 to $4.25 per foot depending on length, and a 30-amp hookup costs $20 while 50 amps costs $40 per night. The BIBB doesn't have fuel, but Payne's Dock next door does. There's a restaurant right at the end of the dock with a marine store across the street. There are other restaurants within walking distance. All in all, a nice (if pricey) facility.
