34-2 Rudder measurments
Author Last Post

Hello Nick,

Congratulations on your Tartan acquisition!

In 2016, we purchased Tartan 33 #107 which also needed the rudder replaced. We were actually able to purchase the rudder through Tartan, though it came from Foss.

When shipped, what the Washburn (WI) Marina technicians discovered was that the new rudder post had an outside diameter of .11" smaller than the original removed. That difference was unacceptable.

I was able to connect the marina with Tartan, and in discussion with Art Averell and Tim Jackett, the solution was to use UHMW tape to wrap the post and resolve the difference. A seemingly beautiful solution that has lasted for about 4000 nautical miles thus far with no issues.

I am providing the manufacture web site (at the time) her, in case needed.

Good luck!

Nick,

I have a 1980 Tartan 33. From the photo from the Tartan 34-2 group website, the rudder looks identical to mine. Here is the photo of the Tartan 34-2 rudder: https://tartansailing.weebly.com/34-2-exterior.html

I spoke with Foss Rudders of California ( http://fossrudders.com/) about fabricating a new rudder for my rust-stained one and here are images they sent to me. One is the original plan and one is an updated and more efficient profile, but too deep for a Sheel keel T-33.

I can't remember the price, but I thought it reasonable for a new and reliable rudder. Maybe $2800 plus shipping.

Good luck with the project.

Larry

Hello, I recently purchased a 34-2 hull #94. The rudder is damaged and needs rebuilt or repaired, I have not dug into it yet.

I'm looking for any kind of drawings or even tape measure dimensions of the 34-2 rudder. Honestly even box dimensions like front leading edge and rear trailing edge would be very helpful.
