The Dismal Swamp Canal on the ICW is one of two ways to transit between the Chesapeake Bay, VA and Albemarle Sound in NC. This is a popular and historic route. The canal has been closed since damage to the locks and shoaling incurred during hurricane Mathew last fall. I stopped at the Dismal Swamp Visitors Center in South Mills, NC while driving north to VA for a canal update and was given a press release from the Army Corp of Engineers. It was dated March 17, 2017 and stated their goal of opening the canal is late summer 2017. For subsequent updates contact.
